Summary:
This is one of the earliest western books written about Feng Shui. It was written about 1870. It is interesting on two counts; firstly it gives the reader a "fresh" overview of traditional Feng Shui because at that time the art was unknown in the west, and secondly because even though the author is obviously impressed by the science and history of Feng Shui, he keeps having to "reel in" his enthusiasm for his conservative, western audience. He wavers frequently between sheer admiration for the Chinese, and amusement at these "uneducated peasants"!

He discusses how westerners in China discovered Feng Shui existed when they tried to build railways in straight lines across the land. This display of ignorance of basic Feng Shui horrified the Chinese who refused to cooperate with the railway builders until they modified their plans.
