Candra Naya was once the biggest Chinese residence in Jakarta. Located on Jl. Gajah Mada 188, the house owned by Khouw Kim An was built in the middle of 19th century. Khouw was the last Chinese mayor in Batavia, thus this old building was called ‘The Mayor’s House’. Candra Naya was an interesting research on a Chinese aristocrat’s traditional house in terms of the building’s wholesome when the research was undertaken. It helps trace the originality of elements and ornaments.

The unique building masses comprised a symmetrical layout. The magnificent ornamented ‘tou kung’ of wooden structure made the house became the important entity for research, documentation and conservation..
